There are currently over 5,500 missing or murdered Indigenous women and girls.
Murder is the 3rd leading cause of death for Native women. The crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Relatives in the United States remains largely under the general public radar.

Inspired by the short documentary film WE RIDE FOR HER, and the work of the Indigenous motorcycle group and sisterhood known as the Medicine Wheel Riders, WE RIDE FOR IMPACT 2023 brought together a coalition of activists, artists and local organizations to RIDE, REFLECT & RESPOND to the MMIW/G/R crisis.

WE RIDE FOR IMPACT 2023 embarked on a journey of hope and resilience, from Arizona to South Dakota, reclaiming space historically denied to Native communities, cultivating moments of celebration, connection and community-building. Tour stops provided an outlet for stakeholders to view WE RIDE FOR HER, and prioritized local engagement and care, while laying groundwork for a larger, national movement.

More to talk about:
WE RIDE FOR HER

A conversation ignited by WE RIDE FOR HER and featuring co-director Prairie Rose Seminole, Medicine Wheel Riders Lorna Cuny and Darlene Gomez, Not Invisible Act Commissioner and former North Dakota State Representative Ruth Buffalo, and actor/comedian and environmentalist Dallas Goldtooth, hosted by Level Forward’s Andrea Ambam. Traverse the origin story and journey of the Medicine Wheel Riders, and uncover the actions that all of us must take to disrupt the erasure and advocate for the end of violence against Native Women.⁣

OUR BODY POLITIC:
How Native Women Are Working to End the MMIW Crisis

This special episode of Our Body Politic highlights the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women’s (MMIW) crisis. Guest-host Andrea Ambam, an Artist and Host of Level Forward’s More to Talk About, speaks with Lorna Cuny, a member of the Oglala Lakota Sioux Tribe from South Dakota and Co-Chair and Co-Founder of the Medicine Wheel Ride and Darlene Gomez, attorney at her law firm Darlene Law, who serves on the MMIW-R Task Force for New Mexico and is General Counsel for Medicine Wheel Ride, about The Medicine Wheel Riders, a national group raising awareness about the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women’s crisis. Then Andrea Ambam speaks with Alecia Onzahwah, about her efforts to arm Indigenous women with information (through The Skye Woman Project) and tools to defend themselves (through Skye Woman Beauty).  We round out the show with Andrea speaking with Prairie Rose Seminole, co-director of the documentary We Ride for Her about owning the Native narrative through community filmmaking.

The Medicine Wheel Riders represent a collective of Indigenous women and allies who journey on a crucial mission to bring attention to the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People, while addressing the unique challenges faced by our Indigenous Women and Relatives. Additionally, we strive to shed light on the issues impacting our communities as a whole. Our mission is rooted in the rich traditions and cultural significance of the medicine wheel, a sacred symbol for many Indigenous communities. Through our powerful rides, we not only raise awareness but also bring much-needed resources to the families affected by this tragedy. Our courageous women ride to amplify the voices of the victims, ensuring their stories are heard and their experiences are acknowledged. By organizing events, the Medicine Wheel Riders create a platform for families to share their pain, seek justice, and find support within a compassionate community. We work tirelessly to bridge gaps in resources, providing crucial assistance to families who often face systemic barriers. Through our efforts, we strive to address the underlying issues that perpetuate this crisis and advocate for comprehensive solutions that safeguard Indigenous lives. The Medicine Wheel Riders aspire to serve as a beacon of strength, resilience, and hope, ensuring that the voices of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous People are never forgotten.

We Ride For Her was conceptualized, supported, and produced by Red Sand Project, a participatory artwork raising awareness about human trafficking. Since its inception in 2014, Red Sand Project has been committed to telling the stories of those who have been trafficked, exploited, or made vulnerable. Red Sand Project has developed deep partnerships with organizations working to advocate for survivors, provide relief and support, and foster community.

From its inception, Red Sand Project has been focused on removing the onus and responsibility of awareness-raising away from survivors of human trafficking and towards communities and allies. This commitment to not retraumatizing those who have lived through violence and trauma—in the name of raising awareness—informs everything that Red Sand Project does. We believe that those who are closest to the issue—who are most impacted—should be those who set the agenda and create solutions. This is why we ensured that our filmmaking team is composed of Native people, families of missing and murdered Indigenous women and people, survivors of trafficking, and people of color.
